「concentrate」「focus」「pay attention」の違いと使い方
concentrate
「集中する」
※ 一点に精神を絞るイメージ。
※ 意識して頑張って“集中する”ニュアンス。
例：We really need to concentrate on studying so we can get a good score on the test.（テストでいい点を取れるように、ちゃんと勉強に集中しなきゃね。）
例：The kids are concentrating on writing their wish list for Santa.（子供たちは、サンタさんにお願いする欲しいものリストを書くのに集中してるよ。）
※ ここで focus を使った場合は、軽め〜中くらいの集中。concentrate を使う場合は、より深い集中。すごく真剣に（他のことを忘れて）取り組んでいる様子が伺えます。

「集中する」
※ 注意や意識を特定の対象に向ける。
※ 対象に意識を向ける“方向性”を表し、より広い場面で気軽に使えます。
例：Try to focus on the task at hand.（目の前の作業に集中してみて（意識を向けてみて）。）
例：Focus on your breathing during meditation.（瞑想中は呼吸に集中しなさい。）
※ 心を一点（呼吸）に向ける。
例：She needs to focus on the positive aspects of her life.（彼女は、自分の人生のポジティブな面に集中する必要がある。）
pay attention
「集中する」「注意を払う」
※ 注意を向ける。
※ 耳や目を向けて、内容を聞く／観察する。
例：Please pay attention in class.（授業にしっかり集中してね。）
例：The younger sister is paying close attention to what her big sister is writing.（妹はお姉ちゃんが何を書いているのか集中して見てるよ。）
※ 観察・チェックするニュアンス。集中としては、focus よりは弱め。
※ pay close attention … close が付くと普通の注意よりも強く・丁寧に・細かく観察するイメージになります。
いろいろな「集中する」
- devote oneself to … 「〜に身を捧げる」「〜に打ち込む」
※ 時間やエネルギーを特定のことに捧げる、深い集中。
例：She devoted herself to learning piano.（彼女はピアノの学習に心を集中させて打ち込んだ。）
※ 長期間・深く取り組むイメージ。
- immerse oneself in … 「～に没頭する」「～に浸る」
※ 完全に没頭する、周りが見えなくなるほど集中する。
例：He immersed himself in the book.（彼は本を読むことに集中し、没頭した。）
- apply oneself to … 「～に熱心に取り組む」
※ 学習や仕事など、自分の能力を活かして努力する。意志的・実践的な努力。
※ 短期・長期どちらも。
例：You need to apply yourself to pass the exam.（試験に合格するには、集中して取り組む必要がある。）
例：She applied herself to her studies and got excellent grades.（彼女は勉強に集中して取り組み、優秀な成績を取った。）
まとめ
短期的・作業的な集中には concentrate on、focus on を使う傾向があります。
pay attention to は、注意を向けるだけ。
